D.R.I., Dirty Rotten LP

Had to squeeze these guys in. After all, not mentioning them and the whole crossover scene would be a crime – although this album is from back during their straight-up hardcore days. Short fast and nasty! So many songs on one LP, it blew people away. (Also check out the Dirty Rotten EP.) The sound was raw, as were most hardcore records back then, but the music played with such heart and feeling that you know they put everything into to every note! Their speed got them noticed and appealed to a lot of underground metalheads.They also influenced the early thrash bands like Slayer and Exodus. Later, they went onto spearhead the crossover movement with C.O.C. and Suicidal Tendencies.

Cro-Mags, The Age of Quarrel

This one is a monster. Victim in Pain put N.Y.H.C. on the map, but this one shoved it down your throat! Combining a love of the Bad Brains, Black Sabbath and Motorhead with the New York Hardcore sound and lifestyle of living in squats on the then-violent lower east side, there is no album as real and gritty as The Age of Quarrel. influential? Hell yeah, and far beyond just the hardcore scene. Everyone from Metallica to Bleeding Through to yours truly have been influenced by these guys. The music is intense and powerful, it has that N.Y.H.C. energy, and it resonates right down to your very core!

Sadly, the production doesn’t capture the weight of these songs as it should have. But the performances are there, especially form drummer Makie, who style was fresh and innovative and never duplicated. Jon Joseph’s vocals are brutal without being Cookie Monster-like. He has an urgency in his voice, but also has something no-nonsense in there. You know he’s walked the walk before he talked the talk – something the thousands of imitators that came later never got right. Harley Flanagan’s unique bass playing was the perfect combo of Lemmy and Geezr Butler, and with Paris Mayhew and Dough Holland’s crunchy riffs and blazing solos, Cro-Mags got the attention of the mainstream world outside of the NY scene.

But as with many bands so intense and explosive, in-fighting destroyed this classic line up. The follow up album, Best Wishes, is a good effort, and it has better production, but still, with out Makie and Jon, it just didn’t have the same feeling. The Age of Quarrel is legendary, inventive and relevant to this day. Today’s bands can tune down all they want, but they’ll never be as heavy as this, ’cause this album has a soul.

Is it just me or is Metal Blade Records on something of a win streak lately with their young band signings? While certain labels to remain nameless seem to be venturing into either mainstreamy/emoy metalcore or seem content to sign the same old same old or hedge their bets all on one sub-genre, Metal Blade’s young band roster is extremely diversified and remarkably clunker free. Let’s take a look at the band’s they’ve signed in the past couple of years:

* Aeternam: Classic American death metal mixed with a more melodic, epic, and Euro — but decidedly dark — sense of melody. Check out the song “The Coronation of Seth” on their MySpace page — pure win.

* Allegaeon: Technical melodic death metal that our own Sammy O’Hagar seemed to like and that our own Bob Cock seems to LOVE.

* Bison B.C.: My favorite of the Mastodon-inspired psych/stoner/crust metal masses with a good bit of originality. Incredibly fun to watch live.

* Istapp: Frosty Immortal-style black metal that indulges in every cliche in the book (in a good way) and isn’t mired in shit production.

* Barn Burner: Up-beat, throwback stoner metal ala The Sword that’s got some real soul and actual musicality.

* Fleshwrought: Johnny Davy’s and Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity, Animals as Leaders) new tech-death project. Quality!

They’ve been on the label a bit longer, but I’d also like to toss Woe of Tyrants into the conversation; a very talented young band that isn’t necessarily breaking any molds but is very, very good at what they do and seems criminally under-exposed. And while we’re at it, The Ocean; although they’re practically Metal Blade vets at this point, they’ve still kind of got “young band” status in the U.S.

Line-up is changing: BARREN EARTH for KYPCK published 2 weeks, 6 days ago

Finnish band KYPCK has cancelled all their summer shows including BA festival. Here is their official statement: “We unfortunately have to cancel our performance at this year's Brutal Assault. The circumstances regarding the band, our new record company and our new album are chaotic to say the least, and we feel it is better to cancel now than 2 days before the festival when flights, hotels etc. would have already been paid for. We deeply apologize to the organizers and everyone who was looking forward to the show.”

KYPCK is dead, long live the BARREN EARTH! Finnish “all-stars” group, comprised of members of other bands like SWALLOW THE SUN, AMORPHIS or MOONSORROW, will present their debut album called „Curse of the Red River“ which is a progressive epic that draws you in and holds you by the head while it transitions through atmospheric, brutal, melodic passages that massage the ear and punch the gut.
